Out of the Box

Project Overview

We knew it had something to do with Mr. Oxlade when an email appeared with his name as the subject — Festival Designer and we need to move quickly — two points that stood out from within. And so, after a series of briefings from Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), we gathered materials and went into the studio equipped with scissors, a camera and pleasant dispositions. You've never seen a more proficient use of scissors.

Disciplines

Visual Identity, Online

Festival Designer, Jonathon Oxlade (pictured left) — top chap & multi-disciplinary champion.

Sifting through Oxlade's paper collection there was only one unspoken rule, everything must fold, at least once. One of few spoken rules was to avoid process redundancy i.e. minimise the need for photoshop retouching post shooting. The brief entailed the delivery of a new visual identity and graphic system for online, environmental and marketing collateral with the key focus a 44-page program — or as the client described, an art book. For the art book QPAC allowed ZHC to drive decisions regarding maximum word count for copy per page and with only 8 events, 8 workshops and a handful of other pages we lapped up the idea of playing with space. Many hours of making and doing culminated in a fresh new identity for QPAC's flagship event and a little book full of wonderment for the all important knee-highs of Bristown. Here miniature paper scenes from select events within the festival program were each meticulously positioned with stealth hands and photographed whilst staying very still, holding ones breath so as to not blow the pieces over.

Left & Top: Website templates were designed to compliment the branding and visual identity. The layouts were highly considered to carry the flavour of the festival while adhering to QPAC's developer guidelines and framework restrictions.
